The Office of Economic Development at SRTC-Bainbridge recently honored its first cohort of Professional Plumbing graduates. The program began on April 13th with online sessions and included hands-on exercises throughout the course. With online and face-to-face courses planned for evenings and weekends, this course was tailored to the needs of busy professionals, according to Economic Development Director Susanne Reynolds. The 160-hour program included training courses in plumbing, supplementary forklift certification and first aid, CPR and Heartsaver AED certification training. The program ended on August 5th.
The Plumbing Professional program is designed to introduce trainees to the installation, maintenance and repair of many different types of piping systems. Instructors Dennis Miller and Leonard DeMarco taught trainees on a range of topics such as plumbing safety, plumbing tools, plumbing math, plumbing drawings, plastic pipes and fittings, copper pipes and fittings, cast iron pipes and fittings, carbon steel pipes and fittings, plumbing fittings, DWV systems (Drain, Waste, Vent) and water distribution systems.
Participant Todd Hand said, “The Plumbing Professional program was instrumental in introducing the basic and intermediate principles of the plumbing trade. I really enjoyed the face-to-face labs because we were able to get a feel for the tools and techniques taught in the online course. My plan is to help friends and family with simple plumbing jobs and eventually get certified as a master plumber. “
The next Plumbing Professional program starts in January 2022. The class meets on Monday and Wednesday evenings until April 27 in a virtual classroom and on Saturdays for eight practical exercises in the SRTC-Bainbridge. While this program is not eligible for traditional financial assistance, funding may be made available for participants who qualify.
