Southwick to mandate tree replanting after uptick in tree removal requests

SOUTHWICK — After what a local official described as a recent influx in calls from residents asking for emergency tree removal certification, the Southwick Conservation Commission will now mandate the replacement of any trees taken down.

Conservation Coordinator Sabrina Pooler told the commission Monday evening that in the last couple of weeks there has been a notable increase in calls from residents asking for emergency certification to have a tree removed from their property. With the increase, Pooler asked the Commission whether it would be a good idea, and allowable, to mandate that landowners must plant a new tree on their property when removing an older tree.

A lot of the calls, Pooler said, have been from residents near Congamond Lake.
