The Church Street Marketplace has chosen a tree for the annual tree lighting ceremony.

The hard part now is getting the tree to the top of Church Street.

That’s where Barrett’s Tree Services of South Burlington comes into play.

They act as the “middle man” between connecting with the tree donor and being the ones that cut it down to set up in the marketplace.

This year’s tree comes from a South Burlington family, that is friends with BJ Barrett, one of the owners of the tree service.

They’ve discussed donating one of their trees for a few years now. BJ reached back out to them this year and the family decided this was the right year to do so.

BJ says he’s been involved in the process of setting up the tree for over the last 20 years.

Even though he knows it’s a challenge, he has the process down pat.

“We’ve got a pretty good system down,” Barrett said. “We’ll be there in the morning and come up with our plan to cut the tree. We lift it, hoist it, and set it on a flatbed trailer by crane. Then we secure the tree.”

The procedure doesn’t stop there though.

“We ship it off to Church Street Marketplace with a police escort,” Barrett said. “From there, we reset the tree, set it back up, brace the tree, and then we start the decoration process.”
