Are stainless steel kitchen appliances worth it? An expert reveals

The kitchen has long been considered the heart of the home, says Ron Shimek, president of Mr. Appliance, a neighborhood company. This is still true for many homeowners: this is where meals are prepared and shared, and stories are told here. “It is important that this space is designed according to the comfort and style of the homeowner,” he explains. “That’s why stainless steel products have been a favorite in the kitchen for many years – they’re slim and always look effortlessly modern.” Before you upgrade, however, there are a few things you should know about these appliances, including their durability and cleaning requirements.

Stainless steel appliances are durable and easy to clean

As the name suggests, stainless steel appliances are resistant to many forms of wear and tear, including rust, water, and heat damage, notes Shimek. “Not only are they difficult to stain, they are also difficult to scratch!” Cleaning stainless steel is also easy. “Just use a warm, damp cloth with a little mild detergent to wipe away any spilled food or lighten dull spots. Make sure you pay attention to the direction of the grain, ”he explains. “When in doubt, always refer to your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s tips on how to care for this particular device.”

They work well for families

Stainless steel is a non-porous material that can prevent germs and bacteria from settling (according to Shimek, woods and plastics are not as resistant). “This makes these devices ideal for households that also have children or seniors,” he explains.

These devices can withstand a wide variety of problems, including heat, fire, and rust, explains Lisa Seeger, design trend expert at N-Hance, a company that overhauls many kitchen components – and they’re just as diverse from an aesthetic point of view. “They are designed neutrally, which is nice,” she says. “You can change the wall and furniture colors without disturbing the surface of the device.”

Stainless steel easily shows dirt, stains and fingerprints

While stainless steel equipment is easy to clean, these machines are prone to high maintenance. “Every stain is visible, which means homeowners may need to wipe their devices several times a day,” says Shimek.

They can be expensive

Cost is one of the biggest deterrents homeowners face when purchasing these types of devices, explains Shimek; they are usually more expensive than their counterparts made from other materials. However, they are a worthwhile purchase, say our experts: “One thing to keep in mind: the initial investment can be maximized through correct and timely maintenance and repair if necessary in order to extend the life of the device,” says Shimek. “When you buy these machines, do not postpone repairs and provide normal maintenance when necessary.”

Not every model is magnetic

While some models work well for families with children, they don’t all serve to showcase your little one’s latest piece of art. “This may not be for everyone, but some stainless steel devices are not magnetic,” explains Shimek. “For someone who collects funny magnets for fridges or who likes to have pictures on them, they may have to search a little more carefully to find the right magnetic device for them.”
