The tree tends to be the centerpiece of most Christmas celebrations — it is what you gather ’round, and the spot that Santa leaves the gifts, after all.
Heading to a local Christmas Tree Farm and cutting the perfect tree is somewhat of a tradition for many Michigan families, and tons of farms in southeast Michigan have stepped up to meet the demand.
Here, we’ve listed 15 local tree farms to choose from this holiday season. Each one offers different varieties of trees, including Firs, Spruce, and Pine.
Before you head out
A live Christmas tree comes with a bit more responsibility than a fake one. Before picking a live tree, the Michigan Christmas Tree Association and the MSU Extension Center suggest first-time buyers consider how big the space is they’re going to put their tree, and the features of each type of tree.
Heavy ornaments require strong branching, if you don’t want to sweep up needles every day, you’ll need a tree with good needle retention, and you don’t want to try to squeeze a 12-foot tree in a six-foot space. Some trees also have a stronger scent than others. You can read up on the different feature each variety of tree offers here.
Once you get your tree home, it’s important to get the tree in a stand and watered. A dry tree can become a fire hazard, so it’s important that your tree has enough water each day. Learn how to keep your tree properly watered here.
